Costello calls for end to USA embargo of Cuba

by Cllr Joe Costello

Speaking with the Cuban ambassador at a press conference in Liberty Hall today on ending the U.S. economic, commercial and financial blockade of Cuba, Joe Costello TD stated:

“After more than half a century of U.S. sanctions against Cuba, the world has moved on and it is high time that the United States recognised that its political leaders, particularly the Republicans, are caught in a time warp.

“I welcome UN Resolution 69/5 entitled ‘Necessity of Ending the Economic, Commercial and Financial Blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba’.  This resolution will be debated at the UN General Assembly next week on the 28th of October 2015.

“Furthermore, I welcome too the historic announcement by President Obama in December 2014 that he would re-establish diplomatic relations with Cuba. What is required now is for the U.S. Congress to dismantle the legislation underpinning this embargo.

“Ireland and the EU should be proactive in urging the U.S. to move quickly on the sanctions.  Irish financial institutions should make it clear that they will carry out transactions with Cuba and Cuban business without fear or favour.  The Irish Government should explore the possibility of a trade mission to Cuba to encourage business links and, of course, we should support Resolution 69/5 when it is tabled at the UN next week.”
